Lerner +Associates Architects were retained by the Golden Gate National Parks Association (Conservancy) to provide consulting preservation services for the Warming Hut project which consisted of rehabilitating and restoring the existing Fort Point Mine Depot building (Building 983), a 1909 Army storehouse in the Presidio of San Francisco, and adaptively reusing it as a visitor contact center with an information center, café, and bookstore. Lerner+Associates Architects assisted the Conservancy and the National Park Service architects and project managers in determining a rehabilitation strategy that recognized the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Included in developing this strategy was an evaluation of the character defining elements of the structure and how they would be treated in the rehabilitation scheme. Lerner +Associates Architects attended design and site meetings to discuss and view the work proposed and made recommendations based on these meetings and visits. The resulting project is a showcase of sustainability both inside and out that respects the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation.
