The renovation of the existing restroom and the design
of a new facility were based in part on sustainable
design practices. Sustainable elemenets for both buildings
included a passive ventilation system with the use of
metal louvers, ceramic tiles made from recycled glass,
seawater pumped from the Bay for use in the toilets,
and innovative plumbing fixtures such as waterless urinals.
For the new building, concrete masonry was used because
of its durability in the islands sometimes harsh
environment and its similarity to common island materials.
Glass block with its insulative properties and natural
light characteristics was used in the windows. In the
specifications, environmental goals were set for the
project which included project waste management and
recyling strategies for demolished materials. |
